I started teaching in 2013 in Austin, Texas. I worked for the UTeach Outreach program that was affiliated with my university. I worked three times a week (twice teaching/once lesson planning or training) for two semesters as an After School Tutor teaching low-income elementary students STEM curriculum. My students were fourth graders around 9-10 years old. I wanted to work with UTeach in order to gain teaching experience with young learners before leaving the U.S. to teach English in Spain. I started teaching English in the fall of 2014 in Seville, Spain in Western Europe. I applied to the Auxiliares de Conversación de Inglés (English Conversation Assistants) program hosted by the Spanish government. I spent three wonderful years teaching English in Andalucía, Spain to young learners and adolescents ages 6 to 18. I taught everything from math, history, science, P.E., philosophy, etc. in English as a part of the Spanish public school system's bilingual program. Additionally, I gave private English lessons to supplement my income. My private students in Spain included children, teens, and adults. I also helped other teachers in their English lessons, supervise field trips, and monitor students during recess and lunch time. I learned a lot during my time in Spain. In 2017, I moved to Lisbon, Portugal. I started working with a private English academy. There, I taught English to students of all ages from 5 up, but I mostly taught adolescents and adults. At the academy, the classes I taught were CEFR based and focused on conversation. I was expected to give feedback or grades, lesson plan, and determine English levels based on CEFR. As mentioned above, I started teaching private lessons to adults in Spain in order to supplement my income. However, my experience teaching adults really grew when I started working at the English academy in Portugal in 2017. I trained hard and learned what it was like to give group classes to adults with varying English levels and from all backgrounds. I managed classrooms and planned lessons that fit class levels from A1 to C2. I also gave one-on-one lessons during my time there, too. With each student, I was able to gain more experience and knowledge about how non-natives learn English and what they expect from native English teachers. My time there made me appreciate how important my work is to a lot of people who see English as a tool for bettering their lives. My online teaching experience began with VIPKID in 2017, prior to my moving to Portugal. Since then, I have continued to work with VIPKID, each year growing with them. I have maintained regular students on the platform, the majority of which are from China. I teach all levels from their Level One young learners to more advanced students in Levels 7 and 8. I have been certified in and taught most of the curriculum provided by the VIPKID platform. I have trained on how to keep young learners invested in their online lessons through the use of TPR, props, regalia, etc. I sing songs, dance, and have conversations daily. I implement reward systems and AR in class as well. I started working online full-time when I joined Cambly in 2019. In the mornings, I focus on VIPKID (due to the time zones), and in the afternoons I work on Cambly. Cambly has given me more freedom to work when I want. I give class to children, teens, and adults on the platform. I use the Cambly curriculum that is provided along with my own materials that I have gathered over the years. On Cambly, most of my students want conversation classes, so I give them guided conversation lessons. Other students want test preparation or have questions about business English. Some students want grammar lessons. I try my best to give comprehensive and productive classes to each student. If you book with me, I can guarantee you a fun and productive class that will leave you feeling accomplished in your English skills. As a language learner myself, I know and appreciate the hard work and determination it takes to learn a new language. So with some patience, guidance, and kindness, together we can reach your goal of English fluency! I hope to see you in the classroom soon!
